چکیده

Recently there has been considerable interest in atmospheric discharges operating in a glow discharge mode i.e. with a spatial and sheath structure similar to that of low pressure glow discharges [1,2,3]. Here spectroscopy has been used to characterise an atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD), operating with either dry air, argon or helium gas flowing through the inter-electrode space and with the interelectrode gap either free or with woven polypropylene or polyester samples present. Emission spectroscopy is used to determine the rotational and vibrational temperature of the nitrogen gas, while electron temperatures are determined from the relative intensities of Ar emission lines. Ozone production is monitored by a simple absorption technique to evaluate its potential in process control.

Spatial profiles of N2 concentration in an atmospheric pressure nitrogen glow discharge

Spatial profiles of N2 concentration are measured in an atmospheric pressure nitrogen glow discharge by cavity ring-down spectroscopy. At discharge currents of ∼100 mA, we measure centreline ion concentrations on the order of 1012 cm−3, and radial profiles with radial-half-maximum of ∼1 mm. The measurements have sub-ppm concentration sensitivity, and sub-millimetre spatial resolution. Using a c...

Pulsed RF discharges, glow and filamentary mode at atmospheric pressure in argon

The properties of a pulsed radio frequency capacitive discharge are investigated at atmospheric pressure in argon. The discharge can operate in two different modes: a homogeneous glow discharge or turn into filaments. By pulsing the 13.56 MHz generator both the filamentary and the glow modes can be selected depending on the pulse width and period. For a 5μs pulse width (∼70 RF cycles in the pul...

Characteristics of Atmospheric Microplasma in Small Discharge Gaps

Emission spectroscopy analysis and imaging technique were used to study the microplasma phenomena. The microplasma discharge in Ar and N2/Ar was analyzed along the discharge gap area and also for specific periods of time during the discharge. Microplasma showed characteristics specific with an atmospheric glow discharge: positive column, Faraday dark space and negative glow. Spatial and tempora...

Influence of the interelectrode distance on the production of nanoparticles by means of atmospheric pressure inert gas DC glow discharge

This work is aimed at investigating the influence of the inter-electrode spacing on the production rate and size of nanoparticles generated by evaporating a cathode on an atmospheric pressure dc glow discharge. Experiments are conducted in the configuration of two vertically aligned cylindrical electrodes in upward coaxial flow with copper as a consumable cathode and nitrogen as a carrier gas. ...

Attenuation of single-tone ultrasound by an atmospheric glow discharge plasma barrier

Propagation of 143 kHz ultrasound through an atmospheric pressure glow discharge in air was studied experimentally. The plasma was a continuous dc discharge formed by a multipin electrode system. Distributions of the gas temperature were also obtained in and around the plasma using laser-induced Rayleigh scattering technique. Results show significant attenuation of the ultrasound by the glow di...
